Story

Hi everyone,

In 2018, I've got back into my fitness and training. With my limitations now it's mainly the bike which most of you know I love. I'm riding in the Amy Gillett Gran Fondo in September (120Ks with 1857m of elevation), which is a great event and a main driver of bike riding safety around Australia. Again I’m sure you’re aware, Amy Gillett was an inspirational Australia Cyclist taken much too soon, from an accident in Germany. A young driver lost control of her vehicle and took out an Australian Cycling Team, and tragically took Amy's life.

The Amy Gillet Foundation was formed with a key objective being to increase bike riding safety.... you may have heard 'A meter matters'. This campaign has enjoyed great success with a 1 meter minimum rule when passing a cyclist being legislated in NSW, ACT, QLD, SA and TAS. WA and NT are trialling it, but unfortunately VIC has only adopted it as a guideline to date.

As part of the ride, I've started a donation page with a target of $700. If you feel it worthy and appropriate (noting everyone’s contributing and supporting their own passions), it would be great if you can donate whatever you can to support this great foundation and the work they do; and honour Amy's memory. I’ve also posted on Facebook, so please share if you want.

Cheers Woody

Some general info below:

I am passionate about helping the Amy Gillett Foundation create a safer environment for all bicycle riders and help improve traffic flow for all road users.  Did you know that over 40 people are killed and over 10,000 bike riders are seriously injured in Australia each?

I am taking part in the fundraising challenge leading up to the Wiggle Amy’s Gran Fondo event in September 2018 to help the AGF raise at least $100,000 to invest in educational program initiatives to create a safer environment for riding.

Any contribution you can make will help the AGF achieve its vision of zero bike rider fatalities.

Amy Gillett Foundation

The Amy Gillett Foundation (AGF) began its work in 2006 in the name of Amy Gillett, who was tragically killed as a result of being hit by a motorist whilst cycling with the Australian Women’s Road cycling team in Germany in 2005.
The Amy Gillett Foundation's vision is for safe bicycling throughout Australia in order to achieve the ultimate target of zero bicycling fatalities.
The Foundation promotes a safe and harmonious relationship of shared respect between bicyclists and motorists – to highlight the importance of being responsible every time we head out on the road whether we're on two wheels or on four. Why? Because everyone deserves to arrive at their destination safely irrespective of their chosen mode of transport.
